Nervous about trying online Pilates for the first time? That’s completely normal — and you’re in the right place. This guide covers everything a beginner needs to know before joining their first Zoom Pilates class.
You Don’t Need to Be Fit to Start
This is the biggest misconception about Pilates. You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to be strong. You don’t need any experience. Pilates for beginners is designed to meet you exactly where you are.
At Holistic Fitness, every class is mixed ability. Emma-Louise provides easier and harder options for every single exercise. If something doesn’t feel right, you modify it. If you need to rest, you rest. Nobody is watching or judging you — everyone is focused on their own workout.
What You’ll Need for Your First Online Pilates Class
You don’t need to buy anything special. Here’s what to have ready:
- A mat — a yoga mat is ideal, but a thick towel or carpeted floor works fine for your first class
- Comfortable clothing — leggings and a t-shirt, anything you can move freely in
- A small space — about 2 metres by 1 metre, enough to lie down and stretch out
- Water — keep a bottle nearby
- A laptop, tablet, or phone — with Zoom installed (it’s free)
That’s genuinely all you need. No resistance bands, no Pilates ring, no special shoes. Bare feet are best.
What Happens in a Beginner-Friendly Zoom Pilates Class
Before Class Starts
Join the Zoom link a few minutes early. Emma-Louise will welcome you. If it’s your first time, let her know — she’ll keep an eye on you and give extra guidance throughout.
The Warm-Up (5-10 minutes)
Every class starts gently. You’ll do some breathing exercises, gentle stretches, and movements to wake up your spine and core. Nothing intense — just preparing your body.
The Main Class (30-40 minutes)
This is where the work happens. You’ll do a series of exercises targeting:
- Core muscles — the deep stabilising muscles around your trunk
- Spine mobility — flexion, extension, rotation, side bending
- Hip and glute strength — essential for lower back health
- Shoulder stability — important if you sit at a desk
- Balance and coordination — controlled movements that challenge your body awareness
Emma-Louise demonstrates every exercise clearly and calls out modifications as she goes. You’ll hear things like “if this feels too much, bend your knees” or “to make this harder, extend your arms.” There’s always an option that works for you.
The Cool-Down (5-10 minutes)
The class finishes with stretches and relaxation. You’ll feel lengthened, warm, and calm — not exhausted.
Common Beginner Worries (and Why They’re Unfounded)
“I’m not flexible enough for Pilates”
Pilates builds flexibility — you don’t need it to start. Most beginners can’t touch their toes. That’s fine. You’ll get more flexible over time.
“I’ll look stupid on camera”
Your camera can be off. Nobody else can see you except Emma-Louise (and only if you choose to have your camera on). There’s no gallery view of other students.
“I won’t be able to keep up”
Go at your own pace. If you need to pause, pause. If an exercise is too hard, do the easier version or skip it entirely. Emma-Louise would rather you do three good repetitions than ten rushed ones.
“I’m too old / too unfit / too overweight”
Our students range from their 20s to their 70s. Pilates is low-impact and can be adapted to any body and any fitness level. It’s one of the safest forms of exercise you can do.
What to Expect After Your First Class
After your first online Pilates class, you might feel:
- A pleasant muscle awareness (not soreness — just “oh, I didn’t know those muscles existed”)
- More relaxed and centred than before
- Surprised by how challenging some simple-looking exercises were
- A sense of achievement for showing up and trying something new
Most beginners notice real improvements within 4-6 weeks of regular practice: better posture, less back tension, improved sleep, and generally feeling stronger.
How Much Does It Cost?
- Single class: £4 (pay as you go, no commitment)
- Unlimited monthly pass: £39.95 for access to every online class
There are no joining fees, no contracts, and no minimum commitment. Try one class and see how you feel.
